Frequently Asked Questions

1. Q: What is the NFRC?

A: The NFRC is a non-profit, public/private organization created by the window, door and skylight industry. It is comprised of manufacturers, suppliers, builders, architects and designers, specifiers, code officials, utilities and government agencies. NFRC provides consistent ratings on window, door and skylight products.

2. Q: Why do I need an NFRC label?

A: A growing number of states require NFRC numbers because of the code compliance. [We can assist you in determining if you sell products to states where NFRC numbers are mandatory]

3. Q: How do I get NFRC labels for my products?

A: You need to sign a license agreement with the NFRC and then select an accredited simulation lab, an accredited test lab, and a certified IA (Independent Agent). The IA issues approval for the label, which can be printed by a manufacturer or third party.

4. Q: What is an IA?

A: IA stands for Independent Certification and Inspection Agencies (IA's). They issue authorization for an NFRC label called Certification Authorization Report (CAR) from which label can be printed for each product.

5. Q: Who can perform simulations with THERM and WINDOW?

A: For NFRC certification, only NFRC accredited laboratories can perform simulations. For in-house product design or verification, anybody can perform simulations (training is recommended).

6. Q: What is the typical lead-time for simulations?

A: Normally testing takes about two months and the issuance of a CAR by IA takes about a month. Our simulations are always well within that time frame. We do provide a rush service for simulations. Please inquire with us for details.

7. Q: What numbers go on NFRC label?

A: NFRC label contains U-Factor and SHGC numbers obtained from simulation tools THERM, and WINDOW (sometimes OPTICS for laminates or applied film products).

8. Q: What kind of information do MFG's need to provide simulators?

A: Simulations require drawings (assembly and die), bill of materials, spacer information and glazing information (explained in a separate document. We normally send the document to our new customers, otherwise we could send the document upon request).

9. Q: How many physical tests do I need to do?

A: One physical test per unique product line.

10. Q: What is a "unique product line"?

A: A unique product line is defined by a frame material, frame design, and operator type.

11. Q: Does the use of different spacers in a window make it a different product line?

A: No. Spacers, glazing options, small changes in frame design, etc. are considered to be within the same product line. They may still be different products, requiring different NFRC labels, but it is within the same product line. (We can send separate document describing these details)

12. Q: What is the product within a product line?

A: Different glazing options, spacers, dividers, etc. make products within the product line. Products can also be grouped to minimize number of different labels, but there are strict rules about that.

13. Q: What are the rules for product grouping?

A: Products can be grouped based on: a) Glazing options, Spacer, divider and frame

14. Q: Do I need to re-certify my products after I receive NFRC certification?

A: Yes. Products need to be re-certified at least every four years, but they may be re-certified sooner if the new procedure at NFRC takes place (not mandatory if less then four years, though). For re-certification same rule applies that one product line is tested and verified against the simulation. NFRC label still gets simulation numbers.
